What is the US Secret Service?

The United States Secret Service (USSS) has two primary national security missions: protection and criminal investigation.

Thanks to its mission protectionThe Secret Service maintains the continuity of power and ensures security at events of national importance. protection of the president and vice presidenttheir families, visiting heads of state/government and other designated persons.

The USSS is also investigating threats against these patrons; protects the White House, the Vice President’s residence, and foreign missions and other specified buildings in the Washington, D.C. area.

Likewise, it develops, coordinates and implements operational security plans for special national security events.

Thanks to its mission investigationThe U.S. Secret Service prevents cybercrime and other malicious uses of cyberspace that could create economic instability and undermine confidence in U.S. financial systems.

The Secret Service carries out this function by investigating violations of laws involving: falsification of U.S. securities and obligations; financial crimes such as access device fraud, financial institution fraud, identity theft, and computer fraud; and computer attacks on financial, banking, and telecommunications infrastructure.

How Secret Service Protection Works

Permanent protégés such as the President and Vice President are assigned special agents at all times.

Temporary protégés, such as presidential and vice presidential candidates or nominees, and foreign heads of state, have special agents temporarily assigned to our local offices.

The protection of the President and Vice President of the United States is mandatory. All other persons entitled to our protection may waive it if they wish.
