FAA investigates SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket crash

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is requesting an investigation into a recent anomaly aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The problem occurred during the launch of 20 Starlink Internet satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Thursday night, July 11. According to SpaceX, the Falcon 9’s upper stage engine failed to complete its second cycle as planned, sending the spacecraft into a lower orbit than intended.

SpaceX is investigating the nature and cause of the anomaly under the supervision of the FAA.

“The FAA will be involved in every step of the investigation process and must approve SpaceX’s final report, including any corrective actions,” FAA officials wrote in a notice of anomaly.

“A return to flight is based on the FAA’s determination that any system, process or procedure related to the incident did not impact public safety,” the agency said. “In addition, SpaceX may be required to request and receive approval from the FAA to modify its license to include any corrective actions and comply with all other licensing requirements.”
