Windows 11 has a problem that prevents you from opening “Photos”

Microsoft has recognized that Windows 11 has a bug affects the “Photos” application.and that it prevents said application from opening. When we do so, we find a circle on the mouse icon indicating that the computer is working on trying to open the application, but it does not start and instead displays the error message “Access Denied error on Process Exit (‘Exit Status: -2147024891’)ยป.

This is a significant problem because the “Photos” application allows us to navigate through our image gallery in a rather convenient and simple way. Redmond Giant working on the repair this allows this error to be fixed for good, but it seems like it will take a while, so be patient.

We know that the bug affects both Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 versions. Given the scale of the problem, Microsoft gave temporary solution so we can apply it while we wait for the patch to arrive with the final solution. The steps to be taken are described on the official website and in summary are as follows:

  1. Download the latest WInAppSDK. We have to choose the right one for our operating system depending on the CPU we are using, although it will most likely be x64. If we have doubts about what type of processor we have, nothing happens, we just have to follow these steps to identify it correctly.
  2. Now we right-click on the “windowsappruntimeinstall-x64.exe” file and select “run as administrator”. A window will appear with some text indicating that the installation is in progress. We don’t need to do anything at this point, the process will start automatically and the window will close by itself.
  3. In the case of managed systems, it is also possible to run the installer without problems, once per device.

If we apply all the steps correctly, the “Photos” application should work properly again, at least in theory. The release of a patch with a definitive solution should not take more than a few weeks, but Microsoft has not given an official date, so as I said before, it’s time to be patient.

It’s not the first time Windows 11 has suffered from bugs of this style, and it’s clear it won’t be the last either. In fact, it was one of the most controversial issues that caused the most uncertainty around this operating system, bugs and issues that affected the user experience and irreparably contributed to inflate the myth that it is a bad operating system.
