Citizens of the world: Russia erased borders between countries on Yandex maps

You can only see the limits with a strong approach. The thin gray line is barely noticeable against the background of everything else.

Yandex’s press service reported that the Yandex.Maps service has decided to change priorities by focusing on natural areas instead of borders.

Yandex.Maps is a universal city service that helps you find nearby organizations and places, choose public transport and create itineraries. These are the main scenarios for our users. In the near future, a survey-scale map will be physiographic, where the service is not used in its main scenarios. The emphasis will be on natural areas, not on state borders. Our task is to reflect the world around us. Therefore, mountains, rivers, arctic circle lines and other data typical for such maps will appear on the map. The changes will appear gradually,
– stated in the publication “Durov Code” in the company.

Users of the network immediately suggested that the changes were “related to the situation in Ukraine.” It’s not clear what exactly is meant by this, but they’re probably implying that the company is trying to please all parties and makes different statements to everyone.

  • For Russian officials, the statement will appear as a comment without violating local dictatorial laws.
  • And for everyone else, they will depict attempts to resist the regime and not recognize the occupation of Ukrainian territory.

However, this does not make sense, since all Yandex services are blocked in Ukraine.

  • It will be remembered that the Yandex data center in the municipality of Mänttä was previously de-energized in Finland. The electricity supplier initially said it was ready to suspend cooperation with the Russians as soon as the company comes under sanctions. This did not happen, but CEO Tigran Khudaverdyan was also on the list of sanctions, and the contract was immediately terminated.
  • Later, sanctions were also imposed on Arkady Volozh, the new director and founder of Yandex. According to the EU, Volozh in chief status “financially supports the Russian government and takes part in the actions of the authorities aimed at violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
