France suffered this Friday organized attack on the railway network a high-speed train around Paris that caused serious traffic problems and took place on the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Paris Region President Valérie Pécresse condemned “an attempt to destabilise France” on a key day for the country – the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

The attacks consisted of arson agreed in the boxes of power cables for signaling and communication.

This was reported by the French National Railway Company (SNCF). “massive attack” aimed at paralysing the high-speed train (TGV) network and affecting three of Paris’ four lines, with around 800,000 passengers affected in the coming days.

Traffic problems will last at least the entire weekend and will arise not only on the opening day of the Paris Olympics, but also on special departure and return days from vacation.

The lines affected, with delays and suspensions, are on the northern axes (which also include high-speed trains to London, Brussels, Amsterdam and Germany), western (Brittany, Bordeaux) and eastern (Strasbourg, Frankfurt).

The North, East and Montparnasse stations were particularly hard hit, with thousands of travellers stranded since the morning.

The fourth axis of Paris’ high-speed trains, the south-eastern (Lyon, Marseille), was saved because an attempt to sabotage this line “was thwarted”, as detailed by SNCF.

Pecresse explained that in this fourth line the guards put the saboteurs to flight.

The region’s president explained that 250,000 travellers had been affected today alone, so she asked people not to go to train stations until they received messages from SNCF.

The choice of locations where fires occurred suggests that the authors, in addition to coordination, have technical knowledge.

Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete called the incident a “scandalous criminal act” and stressed the “coordination” of the fires, which occurred at roughly “the same time” today at around 04:00 (02:00 GMT), with incendiary devices and with the perpetrators escaping in vans.

SNCF President Jean-Pierre Farandou, speaking to the press together with the minister, called the sabotage “an attack on France and the French.”

Farandu explained that the repair work is very delicate because the fires affected pipelines that contain up to 500 electrical and fibre optic cables.

“We have to repair cable after cable, it’s almost like a jeweler’s work,” a high-ranking company official explained.

Paris Prefect Laurent Nunez, for his part, announced the dispatch of police reinforcements to the capital’s main train stations to ensure the safety of passengers and facilities.
