Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets across the country to protest the election results last Sunday, while others did so to support the government of Nicolás Maduro.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado left her hideout on Saturday and toured a sector of eastern Caracas with thousands of people to protest the country’s election results, while caravans of followers on motorcycles travelled in support of the government.

Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, which critics say backs the ruling party, on Friday ratified President Nicolas Maduro as the winner of Sunday’s election with 51% of the vote, compared with 46% for opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.

The election results sparked widespread allegations of fraud and protests that subsequently led to a crackdown by security forces after Maduro’s government labeled the demonstrations as part of a US-sponsored coup attempt.

Chavistas march in Caracas ‘in defense of peace’

Thousands of Chavistas took to the streets of Caracas on Saturday to march “for peace” and in support of Nicolás Maduro’s announced re-election as Venezuela’s president.

Dozens of motorcyclists rode several kilometers east of the Venezuelan capital, honking their horns in support of Maduro and in protest against what Chavismo and government authorities see as an attempted coup, citing accusations of election fraud by the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD).

These demonstrations were repeated in some regions of the country, as shown on social networks by Chavista governors and state media, who responded to the call of the ruling United Socialist Party (UPSP), which asked its followers to demonstrate on the same day as the PUD called for protests throughout the country.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Saturday that 2,000 people had been arrested in protest against the official result of the presidential election, in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared the president the winner.
