Safari has received an update in the latest beta of Apple’s operating system, the final version of which is due out in the fall. The new addition is called ‘Distraction Control.’
It comes with functions such as ‘Highlights’, which highlights relevant information on a website (such as a hotel’s phone number or address), or the new Reader mode, which features an automatically generated summary and index.
Because it’s importantApple is taking a step towards allowing users to personalise their web browsing experience, giving them ‘Distraction Control’, another tool to control the details of the content they see on screen.
How does it work?.
- The user can manually choose which elements they want to hide on each web page: newsletterlogin windows etc.
- The blue icon in the search bar will let you know that there is hidden content in case you forget or miss something in the future.
- This hidden content can be revealed again in a few steps Clicks.
ContextThis new feature adds to the recent improvements Apple announced for Safari at WWDC 2024. It’s unusual for an additional improvement to be announced in mid-summer rather than introduced with the rest in June.
It is part of the features recently released by Safari to make web browsing a cleaner experience.
Important details.
- This isn’t just another ad blocker. This is another Safari feature. This doesn’t hide dynamic content, only static.
- Settings work at the device level, they don’t sync for everyone. We can hide items on the iPad but leave them visible on the Mac, for example.
- When we hide an item, it will remain hidden on future visits to the same website.
- There will be no button to hide items en masse, it will have to be done one by one.
Next. This feature will be available this fall on macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. The beta version is already available in the latest releases.
