The Mexican government has requested safe passage for former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who is being held in the Andean country, to be handed over and transferred to a third country, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The agency also added that it had also asked for this, although documentGlas should be released and placed under guard in a safe place “due to the critical health condition he reports.”
«The Government of Mexico has formally requested safe passage from the Government of Ecuador for Mr. Jorge David Glas Espinel, a Mexican asylum seeker,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
In April, Mexico granted political asylum to Glas, vice president from 2013 to 2018. Ecuador says the government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has failed to comply. with their obligations granting this measure to the former vice president, since he was twice convicted of corruption and now faces new charges.
The voice was arrested during a police raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he had been living since December, unleashing diplomatic crisis between the two countries, leading to the recall of ambassadors and complaints to international bodies. (Reuters)
