President Nicolas Maduro has said he will “cut ties” with WhatsApp and has claimed the popular messaging app is being used by fascist groups to threaten Venezuela.
WhatsApp is owned by the American company Meta, the parent company of Facebook.
“I am going to sever relations with WhatsApp. Because WhatsApp is used to threaten Venezuela. And then I will delete WhatsApp from my phone forever. Little by little, I will transfer my contacts to Telegram, to WeChat (…) WhatsApp from Venezuela!” Maduro said in a speech from the government palace.
“Through WhatsApp, they threaten the families of the Venezuelan military. The officers. (…) Through WhatsApp, they threaten everyone who does not speak out in favor of fascism (…) The first step: a voluntary, gradual and radical exit from WhatsApp,” the president added, asking Venezuelans to follow him on the Telegram and WeChat apps.
Venezuela’s electoral commission, which the opposition says favors the ruling party, declared Maduro the winner of the July 28 election, saying he was re-elected with about 51% of the vote, beating opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.
The opposition claims its own detailed calculations show that Gonzalez received 67% of the vote, winning by nearly 4 million votes and receiving more than double Maduro’s support, in line with independent polls.
Maduro’s government is becoming increasingly isolated amid international demands to release election results.
“And we are telling WhatsApp. WhatsApp, go to hell. Stop threatening Venezuelans. Because criminals are using it. Criminals have a Colombian, Chilean and gringo chip,” the leader said to applause from the crowd. (Reuters)
