Vertiv launches MegaMod CoolChip: a pre-engineered, modular, high-density data center solution designed to accelerate the deployment of AI workloads worldwide.
Vertiv has introduced the Vertiv MegaMod CoolChip, a pre-engineered modular data center solution with liquid cooling, making the solution ready to run heavy workloads such as AI, with racks containing tens of kW of components. Vertiv has designed MegaMod CoolChip to be adaptable to various vendors’ AI servers.
Proprietary technology
MegaMod CoolChip is the result of Vertiv’s experience with pre-engineered modular data centers and is specifically designed to meet the needs of AI workloads. The solution integrates Vertiv’s proprietary CoolChip technology for direct-to-chip liquid cooling, power protection and power distribution, as well as other critical infrastructure technologies.
The solution is suitable for both retrofitting existing data centers and new stand-alone data centers. The prefabricated units support power from hundreds of kilowatts per row to several megawatts in total
MegaMod CoolChip is a fully featured solution for critical infrastructure that can be deployed quickly. The short implementation time is the result of a controlled assembly and testing process in the factory. An additional benefit is the additional control over costs and planning.
High density
Main features of the solution are:
- High density workloads: Support for IT systems from various AI vendors, integrated into racks with integrated ducting and high-density rack power distribution units (rPDUs) from Vertiv.
- High density liquid cooling: Direct-to-chip cooling for CPUs and GPUs to efficiently control heat dissipation.
- Efficient power protection and power distribution: Integration of Vertiv energy technologies, including UPS systems and switchgear, for a compact and efficient power delivery.
- Modular design: Prefabricated units including residential and building systems, also available as skid-mounted units to flexibly support new installations, retrofits and expansions.
Vertiv manages the entire development process from consulting to installation and maintenance, ensuring optimized processes and cost savings. The MegaMod CoolChip also helps data center operators achieve sustainability goals by improving power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reducing their carbon footprint.
Small, modular and handy for Belgium
Modular data centers fill a growing niche need. The need for AI computing power is increasing, but traditional data center regions struggle with sufficient (power) capacity to meet this demand. There is certainly room for an alternative distributed approach where computing power is provided in a less concentrated manner. This reduces the load on the network and moves the workload closer to the customer.
The trend is still in its infancy, but has been recognized by Schneider Electric, among others. Vertiv is positioning itself as an interesting partner with MegaMod CoolChip, as the ready-made solution fully meets the requirements. On the other hand, there is also a certain hype about AI. The question is to what extent companies will actually introduce AI data centers on a large scale in the short term. In any case, the data center designs are ready.
