China said it launched a rocket carrying a group of 18 satellites on Tuesday to confirm its presence in space. The satellites were delivered early Tuesday afternoon by the Long March-6 launch vehicle from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China’s Shanxi Province.
The official Xinhua News Agency reported that the rocket entered its programmed orbit without incident. China’s space programme has launched several crewed missions, launched a space station with a rotating crew of three astronauts and sent a rover to the moon to transport rocks and soil.
It has also launched the Beidou satellite system, which is seen as an alternative or possible rival to the widely used GPS system for navigation, mostly operated by China’s strategic rival the United States, for national security, communications and scientific purposes.
