The move comes after Nicolás Maduro announced he was severing ties with the platform, and called on Venezuelans to remove it from their phones.

The mobile application has been owned by Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, since 2014.

The heads of these organizations ordered the closure of all WhatsApp groups that officials used to communicate about their procedures and other incidents, and the messaging app was also to be replaced by the Telegram network, several sources said.

Some military and police commanders have told their soldiers that they can use WhatsApp personally, but not for work-related matters.
