[Síguenos ahora también en WhatsApp. Da clic aquí] At least 24 people died in Venezuela within the framework protests against the results of the July 28 presidential election, in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner, according to a report published Tuesday by the agency NPO Provea.
“Provea records show 24 people died between Sunday, July 28 and Monday, August 5, during events and protests related to the July 28 elections.”
He noted that the Bolivarian National Police’s (PNB) Strategic and Tactical Action Directorate (DAET) is accused of at least two cases of “killing” protesters, in addition to other victims at the hands of armed civilians.
“In at least nine of the reported killings of protesters (…) eyewitnesses identified pro-government armed civilian groups or collectives as possible perpetrators.”
Provea said she had documented the groups’ involvement in “open coordination with law enforcement officials in attempts to suppress demonstrations, attacks on polling stations on election day, and acts of threats and harassment against opposition members.”
“Most of the protests recorded took place in neighborhoods and popular areas of Caracas and other cities in the country.”
Given this situation, Provea warned of an escalation in the coming days of acts of retaliation and “exemplary punishments” against residents of these sectors or public administration workers.
He also said he had already received complaints about harassment, dismissals and deterioration in the performance of people working in government agencies.
“Denying people their human right to democracy, to fair elections, and repressing anyone who demands these basic principles is a crime against human rights,” Provea said.
Although the CNE has not published the minutes confirming Maduro’s victory, as required by law, the main anti-Chavista bloc has released “83.5%” of these documents, which the opposition says show that its candidate Edmundo González Urrutia won by a landslide. (EFE)
