Sony’s latest financial results confirm that the Japanese company has a problem with the PS5. This console managed to surpass the mark of 61 million units sold and remains the best-selling of its generation, but interest in it is decreasing faster than expected and this affects sales.

Cumulative sales of the PS4 over a similar period of time were 63.5 million units and the PS5 reached 61.7 million pieces. The difference is clear, but the most important thing is not so much the total number of consoles sold, but the fact that the drop in sales due to this lack of interest is faster than Sony itself expected.

To all of the above, we have to add another issue that is specific to the PS5 to the income this console generates for Sony, and that is the weakness of the yen. We’ll see how things play out in the coming quarters, but the trend is clear and points to a continued decline in sales that could worsen depending on how Sony plays its cards with its next triple A, as well as the PS5 Pro.

Sony still hasn’t solved the PS5’s other problem, the price

When Sony launched the PS5, it was priced at €499.99 for the version with an optical drive and €399.99 for the version without an optical drive. Speculation and the situation of instability that arose in Europe with the war in Ukraine provided the company with the perfect excuse increase the price of this console by 50 euros.

The PS5 started to cost 549.99 euros and 449.99 euros in versions with and without an optical drive almost two years after its launch. This has never actually happened in the history of consoles The most logical thing is that the opposite is happening.and that the manufacturing costs and depreciation of the console hardware will decrease over time.

The price hike affected a large number of markets, including Japan, and is still valid today. Buying a PS5 in 2024 is more expensive than in 2020, and that’s really nonsense. Sony refuses to permanently lower the price of the console and this is a problem that undoubtedly affects its sales.

I think it’s clear that Sony does waiting for PS5 Pro launch to adjust prices, and that will be when the PS5 gets a permanent cut. This Pro version and the drop in price of the standard model could revive interest in Sony’s console and improve sales.
