Intel confirms 2025 Xeon-D launch with new details

Intel announced on Hot Chips that the launch of its new Xeon-D chips is still planned for 2025. To keep the public warm, the company is sharing some new details about the chip.

In 2025, Intel will launch the latest version of Xeon-D. We’ve known this since MWC and now it’s been confirmed again. At the Hot Chips conference, Intel will reveal some more details about the chips.

As we know, Xeon-D is based on Granite Rapids-D, which in turn is a variation of the Granite Rapids architecture for servers. The D chips are suitable for use in edge applications and have additional capabilities on board. Intel itself speaks of a Xeon 6 SoC.

Specifications

Xeon-D is based on Xeon 6 cores and has the same chiplets as the classic Xeon 6 server chips. These computing cores are supported by an I/O chiplet based on the Intel 4 process and equipped with capabilities that are ideal for edge use. Intel also points out the following specifications:

  • Up to 32 PCIe 5.0 lanes
  • Up to sixteen CXL 2.0 tracks
  • 2x100G Ethernet
  • Four and eight memory channels (BGA compatible)
  • Edge improvements such as larger temperature tolerances and higher reliability.

Intel has not announced an exact launch date. The manufacturer has to warm up potential users of its chips with details, as the company is on the defensive. The quarterly results did not meet investors’ expectations, and CEO Pat Gelsinger had to lay off 15,000 employees as part of a restructuring. AMD is now bringing its own chips onto the market, which are increasingly being met with enthusiasm.
