Flanders is launching two new websites on AI and cybersecurity. On the two sites, the country explains its policy and vision on both topics.
Flanders is launching two new websites under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Innovation. The first is called Cyber Security Flanders, the second Artificial Intelligence Flanders. The names already give an idea of the topics that will be discussed: Flanders wants to use the pages to explain its policy on two important current IT topics.
With the Flemish Cybersecurity Policy Plan, Flanders wants to prepare itself for the challenges in the field of cybersecurity. The government wants to support security through projects, actions and communication. The policy is based on two pillars: research and innovation and cybersecurity for companies.
In the field of research, Flanders collaborates with VUB, KUL, Ghent University and Imec, among others. Research must produce new technologies and mechanisms to, for example, secure applications or improve authentication, authorization and data protection.
Flanders points out the dangers for companies, but the page mainly contains a link to the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s cybersecurity page. If you click through at this point to read the current policy plan, you will be taken to a login window, which indicates that the entire page may not be fully ready yet.
We can read the Flemish policy plan on the AI website. It consists of three parts: strengthening strategic basic research, promoting the use of AI by companies, and raising awareness, diversification and ethical frameworks. Flanders will spend 14.2 and 9.5 million euros on the first two components respectively.
The website provides links to AI-related news, as well as more details on research, the impact of AI on society, and what you can do to get started.
Both websites look neat and contain important information in one place. If you are familiar with the world of cybersecurity or AI, you probably won’t discover much that is new. The web pages mainly serve to show that Flanders recognizes both digital security and AI as important policy areas. More important than the websites are the results: Can Flanders take the lead in security and AI?
