I have already told you on previous occasions that AMD could take an important change of strategy with the Radeon RX 8000 and that we won’t see a graphics card that is the real top of the range in this new generation.

I also told you that Sunnyvale could repeat the approach we saw once before with the Radeon RX 5000, and now a new rumor from a fairly reliable source It reinforced my theory.

AMD has three main goals with the Radeon RX 8000. The first is to reduce costs and maximize revenue, the second is to focus efforts on the best-selling lines within each new generation of graphics cards, and the third is to use this new generation to develop the foundations of a new architecture. more advanced and competitive.

AMD will launch only four Radeon RX 8000s

And these four models will be distributed as follows:

  • Radeon RX 8700 XT: entry model to the higher range, with performance that would be similar to GeForce RTX 4080. Its price will be about 499 dollars-euros.
  • Radeon RX 8700: This will be a true mid-range model and will have similar performance to the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER. Its price will be around 399 dollars-euros.
  • Radeon RX 8600 XT: This model will be placed directly in the middle range and its performance should be higher than the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, but lower than the GeForce RTX 4070. The price of this graphics card should be around 299 dollars-euros.
  • Radeon RX 8500 XT: a basic mid-range graphics card whose performance could more or less match the GeForce RTX 4060. Its price should be 199 dollars-euro.

This distribution matches what AMD was doing at the time with the RX 5000 series Radeons, which were split also in four models: Radeon RX 5700 XT, Radeon RX 5700, Radeon RX 5600 XT and Radeon RX 5500 XT.

To shape these four graphics cards, AMD will use only two graphics cores, Navi 44 and Navi 48. Both are rumored to have a design monolithic core with integrated L3 cache on the same silicon chip as the GPU, something that could significantly improve latency and performance in games, but is not confirmed.

RDNA 4 as a springboard for ray tracing

AMD is going to use this new architecture to introduce many changes to the RT cores and improve the performance of its ray tracing graphics cards. In addition to incorporating new technologies that will debut with the new GPU that the PS5 Pro will use, this architecture could number of two ray tracing cores per computing unit.

If all the leaked changes are confirmed, RDNA 4 could match or even surpass Ada Lovelace’s ray tracing performance, though most likely behind Blackwellwhich, after all, is the architecture with which it will really have to compete, since it is this that will give GeForce RTX 50 life.

We still don’t have a confirmed launch date, but AMD could launch the Radeon RX 8000 between the end of this year and the beginning of 2025. Both dates are valid because nothing is definitive yet and because rumors and leaks don’t quite agree, although the latest ones say they will arrive at the end of the year.
