The share of Windows 11 continues to grow, but not at the pace expected by Microsoft, and everything points to this it won’t beat Windows 10 when it will end its official life cycle in October 2025. A serious problem that occurred already in Windows XP.

History has been repeating itself month after month since launch, with the vast majority of Windows 10 users continuing through the free migration program. The reasons are known and stem from the increase in minimum hardware requirements and their chaotic management. Errors in updates; delays in providing promised features; lower performance… Although it offers a breath of fresh air in terms of visuals and user interface, many feel they are looking at a “tweaked” Windows 10.5.

Windows 11 quota in September

The adoption rate of Windows 11 continues to increase, although this is simply due to the passage of time and the fact that new licenses or Windows 10 PCs are no longer officially sold. The problem is that the rate of increase is too low to move Windows 10 and that the circle is closing. It is estimated that 400 million personal computers may be unsupported within a year. We’ll see what happens in 2025.

The share of Windows 11 exceeded 30% for the first time last month and after a further increase of 0.80% it is close to 32%according to StatCounter. It is not 100% reliable data due to its own methodology, but it helps us assess changes and trends.

Windows 10 is falling at the same rate as Windows 11 is rising (0.85%), which is a sign that growth is mainly coming from this route and not from new users. The share of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows XP remains practically unchanged, adding up to just over 4% between them. A significant number considering that the installed base of Windows is estimated at 1.5 billion computers.

And on Steam? The share of Windows 11 in the main game store on the planet has always been significantly higher than the global one, and this month it exceeded 50%. Twenty points higher. AND a rare bird interesting but insignificant on a global scale.

The million dollar question remains the same: How big a share will Windows 10 have when its technical support ends, and thus how many computers will be left without security updates?
