New Wi-Fi signal covers almost 16 kilometers

The new Wi-Fi distance record uses the HaLow standard and achieved a peak speed of 2 Mbps over a distance of 15.9 kilometers.

Distance, performance and power consumption. The HaLow (802.11ah) Wi-Fi standard performs very well in each of these three factors. Earlier this year, Morse Micro, a wireless technology company, demonstrated that it could cover a distance of three kilometers. Now that record has been broken and a new world record of 15.9 kilometers has been set.

In its first test earlier this year over three kilometers, Morse Micro achieved speeds of 11 Mbps at 500 meters and 1 Mbps at 3 kilometers. Now it’s hitting an impressive top speed of 2 Mbps at 9.9 miles.

With this, Morse Micro has achieved the theoretical maximum range of HaLow Wi-Fi technology. The technology is gradually maturing and is ideal for large outdoor sites with short range. This is also the focus of HaLow, it is of no use for busy city environments or even in villages. Think of large industrial sites or agricultural organizations in conjunction with IoT sensors and other P2P applications.

15.9 kilometers is an impressive world record for WiFi range. We seem to have gradually reached the maximum distance, but perhaps Morse Micro can increase the speed even further. The HaLow WiFi standard is not yet popular today, but perhaps such results could make a difference in the long term?
