Apple has broken its usual silence on some of the technical specifications of its devices and officially confirmed that all models of the iPhone 16 series, including the non-Pro ones, have 8GB of RAM.
This decision represents a change from the previous generation.
Why is it important? The memory increase from 6GB to 8GB on the base models, iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, puts them on par with the Pro models. This allows for the implementation of Apple Intelligence.
In numbers:
- 15 and 15 Plus: 6GB of RAM.
- 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max: 8 GB RAM.
- 16 and 16 Plus: 8GB RAM (previously 6GB).
- 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max: 8GB (unchanged).
contextJohny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, said in an interview: Geekerwan He said that the decision to increase the RAM to 8GB across the line was made primarily to enable Apple Intelligence. According to Srouji:
“We have a lot of data that tells us what’s needed to enable certain features, and Apple Intelligence is one of the very, very important features that we want to enable.”
What changes?Beyond opening the door to Apple Intelligence, increasing RAM also has other direct benefits for the user:
- Better gaming performance. It has been emphasized by Srouji himself, referring to very demanding games and AAA games.
- Improved multitaskingThe basics: The more RAM, the more applications you can have open in the actual background.
- Smoother multimedia editingBoth photo and video retouchers, especially the more intensive ones, will benefit from this increase.
- Better prepared for the future. An advantage for tomorrow: With this increase in RAM, the basic models of the iPhone 16 are better prepared for news with iOS 19, iOS 20, etc.
Between the lines. While the 8GB RAM offered by the entire new iPhone lineup is not a leader when compared to the Android market, where we see higher numbers, Apple argues that the vertical integration of hardware and software allows for superior optimization. Srouji again:
“Our excellent software team will optimize not only the computation but also the memory footprint of each application. So you don’t waste memory.”
Go deeperApple’s decision to equalize RAM across all models narrows the gap between the standard and Pro versions, which could signal a change in the differentiation strategy between the ranges, with differences in cameras or finishes.
In fact, the iPhone 16 is perhaps the most “Pro” non-Pro model we can remember since the iPhone 12, and that could lead more than the average Pro user to settle for a basic model.
