On September 20, Rocket Lab launched five satellites for the French technology company. Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket launched from New Zealand at 7:01 PM ET (Saturday, September 21 at 23:01 GMT or 11:01 NZ time).
The satellites were placed into a 400-mile (643-kilometer) high orbit about 66 minutes after launch, as planned, according to Rocket Lab.
The liftoff was the second attempt of the mission. The attempt on Wednesday, September 18, was aborted when the countdown clock reached zero after the Electron’s onboard computer was triggered by a ground system sensor.
Today’s mission was the second of five Rocket Lab launches for French Internet of Things (IoT) company Kineis. IoT refers to connected devices that share data with each other and the cloud. The technology can be used for everything from tracking shipping containers to updating the shopping list on your refrigerator.
Rocket Lab called today’s mission “Kinéis Kills RadIOT Star.” Kinéis plans to launch 25 satellites with Rocket Lab in total. Ten are currently in space; the other five reached orbit during Rocket Lab’s June 20 launch called “No Time Toulouse.”
