American defense company Lockheed Martin will test a naval version of its new AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) next year. According to the publication Breaking the DefenseJAGM’s new ship-based missile, aimed at medium and large surface ships, is designed to combat drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at sea.
It was created on the basis of the propulsion system and warhead of the AGM-114R Hellfire missile with a millimeter-range radar and multi-mode guidance systems, including the function of detecting moving targets. The range of the JAGM is eight kilometers.
The new missile launchers and JAGM are planned to be equipped on ships that the US military will send to the Middle East.
