The regulator has issued five new rulings on Discord that could lead to a complete ban under Russia’s information technology and data protection laws. Techno 24 referring to the Russian publication Meduza.

Users began reporting Discord outages in September, and the problems intensified around September 20.

Some sources familiar with the situation confirm that Discord may be blocked “in the coming days” due to “violation of Russian law.” This was also reported by Andriy Kovalenko, head of the CPD of the NSDC.

In Russia they are already talking about the possibility of slowing down the messenger. So the country will be taking similar measures once applied to Twitter (now X) and YouTube.

The dispute is important for Russians

It is worth noting that Discord is widely used in Russia, especially among IT specialists, gamers and managers of cryptocurrency projects. At the same time, this platform is also used by the military and blocking the messenger could seriously affect them.

Let us remind you that in August 2024, Roskomnadzor banned Signal messenger, citing violations of Russian legislation aimed at preventing the use of messaging services for terrorist and extremist purposes.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities are also trying to regulate and suppress various digital platforms. In early August, Russian users encountered problems on YouTube. The Kremlin has long threatened to block the video hosting company after it failed to pressure the company to block independent media outlets and journalists critical of Russia’s policies, especially the war in Ukraine.
