AMD is trying to convince business customers to buy Copilot+ PCs with the new Ryzen AI Pro label. The chips are identical to the previously launched Ryzen AI 300.

Every PC these days has to be an “AI PC”. In June, AMD jumped on the bandwagon with the launch of the Ryzen AI 300 processors. Today, the same processors are being re-released and given a Pro label. This word should convince companies to invest in Copilot+ PCs (with AMD Ryzen AI).

To be clear: The hardware doesn’t change with Ryzen AI Pro. The chips that carry the Pro label are the same as the previously introduced chips. You should think of it as a professional version and a consumer version. The Ryzen AI 300 processors feature an NPU that handles AI workloads from the CPU.

This NPU wasn’t a first for Ryzen AI 300, but what makes it unique in AMD’s portfolio is that it adheres to the limit (40 TOPS) set by Microsoft for the Copilot+ PCs. Since the advent of the AI PC, the number of TOPS has suddenly become a specification that determines the success or failure of a processor. For example, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, the showpiece from the stable, achieves 55 TOPS and is now getting a Pro version.

The added value of the Copilot+ PCs lies primarily in the battery life. AMD processors enable up to 23 hours of battery life or nine hours of continuous Microsoft Teams meetings.

The same, but different

What exactly does AMD add to Ryzen AI Pro? The question will be forwarded to Jason Banta, director of the institute Customer OEMDivision of AMD. The Pro versions have a more comprehensive security and management framework. Copilot+ PCs need this more ready for business do, says Banta.

We are mainly waiting for more practical applications. The first generations of Copilot+ PCs have few applications that show why you need so many TOPS in your PC. Copilot is everywhere, but you don’t necessarily need a Copilot+ PC for that. Even the addition of Windows Recall won’t change much. Until Copilot+ proves us otherwise, we will continue to view it as overblown marketing hype, which AMD is pushing even further today.
