Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz assured this Wednesday that the “blue helmets” of the Israeli peacekeeping mission UN in Lebanon (UNIFIL) “human shields» from Hezbollah after at least five soldiers were injured in incidents with Jewish troops.

“This is the terrorist organization Hezbollah, which uses personnel FINUL like a “human shield” deliberate attack on army soldiers from places near UNIFIL positions to create friction,” he said in a statement on social media X.

In the text, the minister insisted that the Jewish state “does not intend to harm” the Blue Helmets.

In addition, Israel’s diplomatic chief stressed that his country believes that UNIFIL will play an important role in the war against the Shiite group Hezbollah, although the mission was already playing an active role before the current conflict erupted.

Referring to the “blue helmets” as “human shields“Katz responded to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Sunday and said that Hezbollah is shooting at Army from positions close to them.

“We got repeated refusals (from the UN), all of them are aimed at providing human shields to Hezbollah terrorists,” Netanyahu said then, referring to his requests to the Blue Helmets to leave Lebanon.

UNIFIL is located in Lebanon. in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

In recent days, UNIFIL has reported that five of his soldiers turned out to be wounded in incidents attributed to Israel, whose army invaded southern Lebanon to fight the Lebanese group nearly two weeks ago.

Netanyahu said Israel is doing “everything possible“to prevent harm to Blue Helmets, but the best way to prevent these incidents is remove them from the territorywhich will require a decision by the Security Council.

More than 2300 people died since the outbreak of violence between Israel and the Shiite group Hezbollah on October 8, 2023, but the vast majority of these deaths occurred after September 17, according to Lebanese authorities.
