Password manager manufacturers are developing a new and secure way to transfer passwords between different password managers.

The FIDO Alliance has developed a concept that enables the secure transmission of passwords to other password managers. This gives users the freedom to switch to another password manager safely. The specifications for this are currently available in draft form. Users can preview and provide feedback. The new concept is supported by companies like 1Password, Apple, Google Microsoft and more.

Storing passwords in password managers has become a popular way to easily and quickly log into a site. There are various password managers that users can choose from. If you are not satisfied with your chosen password manager, it is not as easy or safe to switch to another one for now.

To give users the freedom to transfer their passwords in a secure manner, the FIDO Alliance has created a draft of new specifications. The FIDO Alliance’s Credential Provider Special Interest Group has developed two specifications: the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and the Credential Exchange Format (CXF). This would allow users to easily and securely transfer their credentials to another password manager.

The FIDO Alliance Credential Provider Special Interest Group is represented by 1Password, Apple, Bitwarden, Google, Microsoft, Okta and more. Companies like 1Password and Dashlane have already indicated that they will support these specifications.

“It is critical that users choose the credential management platform they prefer and can switch credential providers securely and easily. Until now, there has been no standard for the secure transmission of credentials and the transmission of passwords or other credentials has often occurred publicly,” the FIDO Alliance said in its announcement.

Currently it is just a concept. Users can view and comment on the alliance’s GitHub repo, but it has not yet been adopted by password managers.
