People are increasingly choosing OLED monitors for their beautiful display, higher refresh rate and resolution.

According to a report by analysis agency Trendforce, sales of OLED monitors will increase by 181 percent in 2024, equivalent to 1.44 million screens. The number would only increase in the coming years. More and more laptops are also using OLED, and desktops are expected to follow soon.

What is OLED?

Non-OLED monitors use LED backlighting, with each LED light illuminating a specific number of pixels. There lies a problem. Perfect black levels are only available with OLED screens.

Illuminated pixels ensure that the black pixels of LED monitors are never completely dark. OLED works with light per pixel. Individual pixels are therefore completely “switched off” or, if necessary, completely black. This ensures perfect black levels and extreme contrast values.

This is perfect for IT professionals and people in photo and video editing. In recent years, the refresh rate of OLED laptops has also increased, which is interesting for gamers. Gradually, these changes will also be transferred to desktop monitors. A disadvantage of OLED is that the maximum brightness is usually lower than with LED screens.

TrendForce predicted that Samsung would remain the largest OLED supplier with a market share of 31 percent. LG, Asus and Dell follow with 19 percent and twice 14 percent respectively. Asus is expected to invest heavily in OLED, while MSI is expected to increase its market share the most.
