For comparison, we can say that the average 5G network offers speeds of around 100 Mbps. At 938 Gbps, users can download a 130 GB game in just 1.1 seconds.

This achievement was made possible by an innovative combination of electronic and optical transmission methods that allowed the team to overcome the current limitations of wireless networks.

How was this possible?

Typically wireless networks rely on radio waves in a narrow frequency range, which can cause congestion and slow data transmission. UCL scientists have overcome this problem by using a wider frequency spectrum by combining both radio technology and optical solutions.

To achieve these extraordinary speeds, the team used two frequency bands, one around 100 GHz and the other in the 130-175 GHz range. A quartz oscillator, similar to those used in computer processors, helped stabilize the signal during transmission.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Zhixing Liu explained that their approach combines two established technologies:

  • high speed electronics,
  • and millimeter wave photonics.

This combination allows you to transfer large amounts of data at unprecedented speeds.

The technology offers improved bandwidth as well as speed, allowing data to be transferred to a large number of users simultaneously due to increased network bandwidth.

Even though the team achieved great results, they set themselves the goal of breaking the 1,000 Gbps mark. Therefore, research and initiatives continue to overcome the new obstacle on the path to 6G.
