SAMSUNG Almost a decade after the successful Gear VR headset paved the way for the VR market, it’s poised for a major return to the augmented reality (XR) or mixed reality (MR) space.

Return of Samsung XR: The new device is expected to arrive with the Galaxy S25

According to Samsung’s third quarter financial report, the new XR device is likely to be introduced in 2025. The device will reportedly bring advanced connectivity options to Samsung’s ecosystem and reinforce the company’s renewed commitment to XR technology.

This strategic shift comes at a time when the Google Play Store has introduced a category specifically for XR apps, signaling a broader move towards mass adoption of XR. Development of Samsung’s new XR device involves collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. During the announcement of the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year, Samsung announced its plans for this collaboration.

The XR device is said to be powered by the Snapdragon The headset is expected to run Android 14 and may feature advanced sensors for environmental awareness, potential health tracking, and a micro OLED display with high pixel density and increased brightness for an immersive experience. It may also include a feature similar to the Persona mode found in Apple Vision Pro.

Facing competition from Apple and Meta with products such as the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest series, Samsung will likely introduce the XR device along with the Galaxy S25 series at the Galaxy Unpacked event in early 2025. This timing will allow Samsung to showcase its integrated Galaxy ecosystem and position the XR device as a perfect extension for Galaxy users.

As industry trends shift towards lighter, smartphone-compatible AR glasses, there are also rumors that Samsung may introduce AR glasses instead of a headset designed to accompany smartphones. This strategy could make Samsung XR glasses an essential accessory for Galaxy smartphone users and bring mixed reality features to daily life.

According to reports, Samsung may also remove the ‘Galaxy’ branding for the upcoming S25 series and rename it as Samsung S25 series. Alternatively, this range could also include the S25 FE model, which is marketed as a “slim” device and potentially a budget option.
