The American electoral process was marked polarization and uncertainty, said Daniel ZovattoFormer Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
“This is the most intense election year in the world, and the United States election, in my opinion, mother of all elections“he stated.
According to Zovatto, the US elections will not only determine the political path of the North American country, but also also world politics. “There are too many things at stake, and they will have very important consequences for our countries.”
There are two visions in the United States: those who believe that this is an election in which Republican Donald Trump seeks to return to the White House and therefore bring about a change of power; and the second, which includes Zovatto, who considers this an existential problem: “What is at stake is the democracy of the United States itself, and therefore the democracy of the world.”“, he noted.
The uncertainty surrounding the election results is largely based on distrust of polls, given that in previous years they were unable to predict who the winner of the competition would be, Zovatto said.
The word that characterizes these polls and how we got to Tuesday is marked uncertainty, fierce polarization and a situation of great political tension.
Additionally, Zovatto warns about former President Donald Trump’s speech that will not accept results that are not in his favor and “it is very likely that if he does not win, he will report fraud again, just as he did four years ago.”
“It’s unlikely we’ll get results on Tuesday night,” he said.
For the former regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, it is likely that electoral phenomenon known as the “broken mirror”where first one result is given, and after analyzing the early votes, another result is given. This is due to the fact that more than 75 million citizens voted by mail.
“We must not ignore the fact that this election may be litigated.”Zovatto said, recalling what happened in 2000 when George W. Bush won after the Supreme Court awarded him Florida’s points.
Elections will be determined in seven states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada.
