About two years ago, Proximus announced the end of its 3G services by the end of 2024. This date is approaching, what are the consequences for you as a user?

Proximus would discontinue its 3G services at the end of 2024, the company announced around two years ago. Now that the end date is approaching, Proximus will inform you of the consequences for users. The telecom operator wants to invest more time in more efficient and energy-efficient technologies such as 4G and 5G.

End of the 3G era

The telecommunications operator wants to phase out 3G completely by the end of 2024. What does this mean for you as an end user? Most 4G/5G smartphone users will hardly notice the end of 3G. You can use your mobile calls and data as usual. Proximus is abandoning 3G to invest more time in more efficient and energy efficient technologies such as 4G/5G. Don’t have a 4G/5G device? Then you can continue to use 2G for making calls and sending SMS until the end of 2029.

Traffic

Proximus also notes that the impact on traffic will be very limited. In June 2024, 3G still accounted for less than one percent of total traffic. Old 3G devices can be taken to a Proximus branch for recycling. Business customers who only use 3G will be notified in advance and asked to replace their devices with 4G/5G models.

Proximus conducted the initial tests to disable the technology without incident.
