Microsoft connects Terminal to ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot. Through Terminal Chat, AI can help you write commands or troubleshoot Windows.

Don’t know where to start in the Windows Terminal? Then ask AI. Windows Latest has discovered an AI chat feature in the latest version of Terminal that has the very original name Terminal Chat. Using Terminal Chat, you can chat with AI to request help with commands or have AI help you find a solution to problems in Windows.

To use Terminal Chat you need API keys. Microsoft offers you the choice between GitHub Copilot, Azure OpenAI or OpenAI. A new window will appear in the settings in which you can connect a chatbot of your choice to the terminal. Chat functionality is then available in PowerShell, Command Prompt, Azure Cloud Shell or WSL Ubuntu.

Ask the AI

The chat window has the same layout as ChatGPT, but with fewer functionalities. You have a text field, an expert button and the ability to delete chat history. The chat feature can help you with simple to more complex commands, find solutions to errors, or write simple code snippets.

Terminal Chat recognizes the context in which you ask the question. When you open the chat feature in a specific tab in PowerShell, it knows to look for information there. The tab is also saved when you switch to another tab. If you switch from PowerShell to Azure Cloud Shell, Terminal Chat will also recognize this.

Microsoft is continually introducing AI functions within Windows under the name “Copilot”. No Windows application seems to escape this anymore. Not every AI feature that Microsoft announces for Windows is a hit.
