A Spirit Airlines plane attempting to land in the Haitian capital was shot at on Monday, forcing it to be diverted to the Dominican Republic.
Spirit said in a statement that the plane was damaged and was taken out of service after landing in the Dominican city of Santiago.
As a result of the incident, a flight attendant was injured, the airline reported. Miami Herald reported that she was hit by a bullet.
No passengers were injured, Spirit added.
All flights arriving and departing from Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince were disrupted, the newspaper reported.
Photos circulating on social media, which Reuters could not immediately verify, showed a bullet hole in the plane’s belly.
Another unverified video, which appears to have been taken by a Spirit employee, shows where another bullet passed through the ship near the rear exit door.
Spirit said it had suspended flights to Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien in northern Haiti “pending further assessment.”
JetBlue said it would cancel flights to and from Haiti through Thursday and take action to determine whether further action may be necessary.
Passengers on Monday’s Spirit flight will be transferred on another plane to Fort Lauderdale, where the ship departed, Spirit said.
Armed gangs in Haiti’s capital have fired on planes in recent weeks as the security situation worsens. Last month, a UN helicopter was shot down by gunfire over Port-au-Prince. (Reuters).
