Israeli prosecutor to prosecute Netanyahu adviser for leaking documents

Israeli prosecutors confirmed this Sunday a request to indict Eli Feldstein, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for leaking classified documents with the alleged intention of providing political support to Netanyahu and preventing an agreement on the hostages. held in the Gaza Strip. Another suspect, who has not yet been identified, will also be charged.

According to an investigative secret revealed this afternoon, Feldstein is under suspicion of “trying to influence the political debate about the hostages” by leaking material to the German newspaper Bild and demonstrating that the Islamist movement Hamas was “unwilling to reach an agreement.” release hostages in Gaza.”

The problem also lies in the fact that the leak included extremely sensitive materials, the publication of which “could cause serious harm to the security of Israel and the state.”

Military censors blocked this information “due to the sensitivity of the material”, but Feldstein tried to publish it in the foreign press and told Israeli journalists as soon as it was published in Bild to write follow-up articles.

The prosecutor’s office sent the indictment to the Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court, which also requests that the detention of both suspects be extended for another five days until the indictment is materialized. The document also states that they will request temporary detention until the process is completed after the charges are formalized, the Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel reported.

This Sunday, Israel’s Supreme Court accepted an appeal against a lower court’s decision to grant house arrest to Feldstein and another suspect, arguing that their arrest was justified by “public safety” and “given the danger that the accused pose at this time.” »

The case sparked controversy in the country, especially among relatives of the hostages, who staged numerous protests against the government demanding an agreement to guarantee their return home.

In early November, the Forum of Hostage Families called for an investigation into the alleged leak of these confidential documents, which were deliberately leaked to the press.

The organization says “suspicions indicate that individuals associated with the Prime Minister acted on his behalf and committed one of the largest frauds in the country’s history.” In this sense, they called these alleged leaks “a serious blow to the credibility of the Israeli government.”

And this same Sunday, Einav Zangauker, the mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, criticized Netanyahu and his circle for these leaks, bypassing military censorship to influence the negotiations on the agreement.

“The Netanyahu gang launched a criminal operation against the release of hostages and aid to the enemy, jeopardizing the security of the state,” he reproached.
