Two U.S. officials and a source familiar with the decision said early Sunday there was a significant change in Washington’s policy in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
“The West has decided on such a level of escalation that may end with the complete collapse of the Ukrainian state in the morning,” senior member of the Federation Council Andrei Klishas said in the Telegram messenger.
Vladimir Dzhabarov, first vice-president of the international affairs committee of the upper house of the Russian Federation, said that Moscow’s reaction would be immediate.
“This is a big step towards the start of World War III,” Dzhabarov said, as quoted by the state news agency TASS.
President Vladimir Putin said in September that the West would fight Russia directly if it allowed Ukraine to attack Russian territory with Western-made long-range missiles. According to him, this step will change the nature and scale of the conflict.
Russia will be forced to accept that Putin called them “adequate solutions” depending on new threats.
Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs, said that allowing the United States to attack Kyiv on Russia using American ATACMS tactical missiles would lead to the harshest possible response, Russian news agencies reported.
“American missile attacks deep into Russian regions will inevitably lead to a serious escalation, which threatens to lead to much more serious consequences,” Slutsky said, as quoted by the TASS agency. (Reuters).
