Trump picks anti-TikTok Republican as communications regulator

US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Republican FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr as the “permanent” president of the agency, which regulates radio, television, telephone, satellite and cable communications.

The politician publicly positioned himself against the social network TikTok.

“I am pleased to announce that Commissioner Brendan Carr will become Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Commissioner Carr is currently the highest-ranking Republican on the Federal Communications Commission,” he announced on his Truth Social account.

The mogul emphasized that Carr is “a champion of free speech and fights against the regulatory war that is suppressing Americans’ freedoms and slowing (their) economy.”

“This will end the regulatory onslaught that harms America’s job creators and innovators and ensure that the FCC acts on behalf of rural America,” the Republican said.

“Thank you, President Trump! I am honored and humbled to serve as Chairman of the FCC. Now let’s get to work,” the commissioner responded on his social media account X.

Carr has been a member of the FCC for the past five years since Trump nominated him at the start of his first term in 2017, and has been unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate three times, although his relationship with the body began earlier this year. In 2012, he began working as an advisor to then President Ajit Pai.

As the organization’s commissioner, he publicly spoke out against TikTok, warning that it was not “just another video app” but rather that it was collecting sets of sensitive data that it had access to. He also pushed for it to be removed from the Apple and Google app stores.

A J.D. magna cum laude from The Catholic University of America, he has practiced as an attorney specializing in appeals, litigation, and regulatory matters.

Carr’s appointment therefore complements the positions the president-elect has announced in recent days in his new cabinet, with that of his campaign spokesman Stephen Cheng being one of the most prominent. Thus, whoever was the director of strategic response during Trump’s first term will join the next US administration as the White House communications director.

Before working on the Republican’s first campaign, Chung was a spokesman for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the most famous mixed martial arts championship in the world. According to US network CNN, the company maintains strong ties to Trump as he routinely attends UFC fights and its president Dana White is an “old friend.” (Europe Press).
