Android 13 OS gave Google Pixel devices the ability to handle files larger than 4 GB for the first time, but the situation is not as simple and obvious as it might seem at first glance. The truth is, Esper’s technical editor Mishaal Rahman recently discovered that when Android 13 went into beta, the Pixel 6 Pro smartphone started to support exFAT, allowing it to interact with really large files. Previously, this new file system support was disrespected by smartphone manufacturers – it was believed that a mobile device does not need it.

But times are changing, as are scenarios for interaction with modern smartphones – what was considered a “big file” in 2006 (the beginning of the exFAT file system), now users are not surprised. Accordingly, in 2019, Samsung decided to use a new file system in its portable devices, and in the same year Microsoft began to actively work in this direction, promoting exFAT integration in Linux. Also, purely technically, Android 12 devices based on 5.10 kernel already have exFAT support, but it turns out that the file system mount service controls access to special helper binaries that run on the Pixel 6 Pro on Android 12. .

Accordingly, the necessary files were not called from the library on the Pixel 6 Pro in Android 12, so working with the file system was not supported. Now the situation should change, and the new version of the operating system will allow you to implement exFAT file system support for normal work with large files in the smartphone’s memory. And, of course, if the work on this issue comes to a logical conclusion, the support for Pixel smartphones will of course not be limited – the exFAT system will be available to a large number of users on compatible devices.
