Elon Musk’s company Neuralink has received permission to conduct the first clinical trial in Canada of a brain implant that could help paralyzed people use digital devices with the help of thought.
This was reported by Reuters, citing the company’s statement, Ukrinform reported.
The study will evaluate the safety and functionality of the brain implant, which will help people with quadriplegia, that is, paralyzed four limbs, to control external devices with the power of thought.
One of the University Health Network hospitals in Toronto was selected to perform the complex neurosurgical operation to implant the device.
Neuralink has already implanted the device in two patients in the United States. The company says it worked well for a second patient, who used the device to play video games and learn to design 3D objects.
Founded in 2016, Neuralink has developed a brain implant designed to help people use nerve signals to control external technology. The company aims to restore people’s lost abilities such as vision, motor skills and speech.
As Ukrinform reported, in February, Neuralink founder Elon Musk said that the first patient into whom the company successfully implanted a brain chip was able to move a computer mouse cursor with the power of thought.
