Volker Turk, The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Tuesday reiterated his concern about the escalating conflict. Israeli attacks in Lebanon and demanded a “permanent” and “immediate” ceasefire that also applies to Israel and the Gaza Strip. “How many more people must die for the parties to put an end to this suffering?“, he said.

Turk condemned the consequences “brutal” war on Lebanese civilians and about theoretically protected groups, such as health care, which should be “protected in all circumstances.”

In this sense and after death of several health workers as a result of Israeli attacksThe High Commissioner warned that deliberate acts “may amount to a war crime.”

Just a few hours before first ceasefireThe UN chief added:

Israel must do everything possible to ensure full protection of medical personnel and minimize any potential casualties as well as damage to health infrastructure.

Turk once again questioned Israeli military offensive in Lebanonto the extent that it caused “major damage” among the population.

He has ‘serious doubts’ that they are respected “principles of proportionality, distinction and precaution“requirements included in International law and are applicable in conflict contexts.

He also expressed regret that the party police Hezbollah continues to fire rockets into northern Israel with the risk that this entails. According to the High Commissioner, this equally “messy” releases, which maintains an “unacceptable” population displacement situation.

The only way to end the tragedy that is affecting innocent people on all sides is a permanent and immediate ceasefire on all fronts; in Lebanon, in Israel and, of course, in Gaza.
