North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the text in mid-June during the latter’s visit to Pyongyang. In the following months both countries have completed their respective approval processes.

The exchange of instruments of ratification marked the entry into force of the treaty on November 4, the official KCNA news agency reported. According to Pyongyang, This is a “powerful” tool in the service of “an independent and fair multipolar world, without domination, subordination or hegemony.”

The treaty establishes that in the event of a threat or act of aggression against one of the parties, the other may convene consultations for coordinate their position and agree on mutual protection measuresin an unprecedented rapprochement between Moscow and Pyongyang.

This renewed desire for military cooperation led to the sending of thousands of North Korean soldiers to Russia. that they will already participate in hostilities against Ukrainian forces. (Europe Press)
