Thompson was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
“This does not appear to be a random act of violence,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. “Everything indicates that this is deliberate, planned and directed attack“.
The suspect, who was wearing a mask and carrying a gray backpack, fled on foot before boarding an electric bicycle and riding to Central Park, police said.
UnitedHealth Group said Thompson was a highly respected colleague and friend to everyone who worked with him.
“We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time,” the company said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and everyone who was close to him.”
UnitedHealthcare is the largest health insurer in the United States, providing benefits to tens of millions of Americans who pay more for health care than in any other country.
