Abu Mohamed al-Jolani, the Islamist leader of the rebel coalition, captured the capital Damascus from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and declared rebel victory this Sunday, December 8th.

Group rebels burst onto official Syrian television this Sunday and announced the “liberation” of the city of Damascus, the fall of “the tyrant Bashar al-Assad,” as well as the release of “all the oppressed from the prisons of the regime.”

Rebels today declared Damascus “free” from President Bashar al-Assad after a twelve-day offensive launched by a coalition led by Islamist group Levant Liberation Organization along with other Turkish-backed factions to defeat the Syrian government.

Shortly after, the rebels declared that government institutions in Syria would remain under al-Jalali’s control until they were “officially handed over.”
