As previously promised, OpenAI is launching the AI video generator Sora. Only: The AI tool is not yet under our Christmas tree.

OpenAI had previously announced that it would launch Sora before Christmas. The AI specialist keeps this promise. The AI video generation model is launched on the sora.com website. Only: Europe is not allowed to join in yet. Sora is not available in European countries. In the rest of the world, users with a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription have instant access to it.

Sora allows users to create videos up to twenty seconds long and up to 1080p resolution. You can also edit existing videos with Sora. The interface works with natural language as well as photos and videos. A storyboard allows users to work with input frame by frame.

It depends on how many videos you can generate as part of an existing subscription. Someone with a Plus account can create up to 50 videos per month at 480p, or even less at higher resolutions.

Boundaries

OpenAI notes that this version of Sora has many limitations. Videos are sometimes unrealistic, especially when it comes to movements governed by the laws of physics. Even complex actions over a long period of time lead to strange results. However, the AI specialist believes the tool is ready to be shared with the general public.

To prevent misuse, OpenAI integrates a watermark into the C2PA metadata. This makes it clear that the video was created with AI. As expected, OpenAI integrates guardrails: For example, you cannot misuse Sora for images of (child) abuse.

Access to Sora will be expanded in the coming months, but OpenAI did not provide any further details. The intention seems to be to bring Sora to the EU, but it’s unclear when that will happen.
