A new report from Genetec shows that hybrid cloud deployments and AI are becoming increasingly important for physical security. IT departments are also playing a growing strategic role in this area.
Genetec has published the State of the Physical Security Report 2025. The report is based on a survey of 5,600 professionals worldwide and highlights key trends in physical security.
Hybrid cloud and AI on the rise
Hybrid cloud adoption continues to grow, with 43 percent of end users saying they will prefer this model within five years. Consultants support this change: 66 percent recommend hybrid implementations. In contrast, only 18 percent prefer fully cloud-based solutions, while 17 percent remain entirely on-premises.
The hybrid strategy is valued for its flexibility and control, allowing companies to manage data and applications both on-premises and in the cloud. Integrated systems are particularly popular in the Benelux countries and Scandinavia. Only 22 percent of end users there work with separate systems, compared to 40 percent in Europe.
Additionally, the report points to the growing interest in AI. In 2025, 37 percent of end users plan to implement AI-based functionality, compared to 10 percent in 2024. Organizations are primarily focused on practical applications such as automated threat detection and process optimization.
IT plays a crucial role in decision-making
Physical security is increasingly becoming the responsibility of IT teams. According to the study, physical security teams and IT departments already work together 77 percent of the time. More than 50 percent of respondents say IT plays a key role in decision-making around security systems.
The rise of hybrid and cloud solutions combined with increasing cyber threats is driving this development. IT offers an integrated approach that merges physical and digital security. This makes security systems more flexible and better prepared for changing threats.
