Google maps will enable business people from the LGTBIQ + community to declare themselves in this way to help people find “queer” businesses in different cities.
However, this is not the first time Google has included features in its maps to support this community, as labels for LGTBQI + friendly spaces and locations have already been added.
In any case, this new update, according to Google, is a new tool for people interested in supporting business and community entrepreneurship initiatives, as well as for members of the movement to create spaces for commerce with each other.
Similarly, the tool for marking businesses in which their owners belong to a particular community has already been an idea previously used by Google, especially in the United States, where entrepreneurs can label themselves as African Americans, Latinos, women, or war veterans.
These types of tags or references will appear in Google Maps on the app interface or can also be searched directly by typing in keywords such as “LGBTQ-owned businesses”, which translates from English as “LGBTQ + owner”.
However, some internet users, especially in North America, have expressed concern about this new feature as this geolocation app will only suffice for a business owner to add this type of label to their building.
Questions arise as to whether unscrupulous people could use such tools only to gain higher sales and ratings than Google, a practice known as “laundry.” As for companies or people who selfishly enjoy a variety of social reasons. For each reason, another word is added to a term such as “pink wash” or “purple wash”.
However, Taylor Liles from “The Verge” says that it would be a bit strange to introduce systems in which members of these communities have to express themselves in these applications. Therefore, Google, like other social platforms, will create these apps in the hope that people will act in good faith.
And that is that in the end, these types of situations that can arise are impossible to handle at the moment because they depend on a person’s own actions. However, Google Maps, if it focuses on developing certain systems to protect the owners of LGTBIQ + buildings or other communities, such as identifying derogatory or hateful comments towards the staff of a particular commercial establishment.
And while this type of digital tactic may not protect people from hate attacks, it does help create more respectable spaces on the Internet and in the cloud.
How to add this tag to a registered business on Google Maps
1. As a first step, the building owner should apply for a corporate profile within the application.
2. Next you need to touch on profile editing and select the business information option.
3. Next, you need to select a tab that says “More”.
4. In this step you have to select the category option and select the label.
5. After updating the information, only the save touch remains.
