The Royal Air Force (Air Force) has abandoned the promising guided drone Mosquito. According to the UK Defense Journal, the drone could fly by 2023.
The decision was made based on analysis of the Light Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft (LANCA) program and a drone demonstrator. Experts from the Air Force and Defense Science and Technology Laboratory concluded that greater efficiency could be achieved with the help of less expensive devices.
It is stated that the abandonment of the Mosquito will not affect the plans to create the drone. The UK plans to create UAVs capable of performing missions after 2035, as part of its Future Combat Air System programme.
“Through the Mosquito project and other pilot activities, the Royal Air Force has made significant progress and gained significant value in understanding and exploiting a range of future drone capabilities. This solution maximizes the experience gained to date and allows us to change the direction of the LANCA program,” he said. BBC Commodore Jazz Holmes.
