According to Western media, US Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Brendan Carr wrote letters to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Among them is demanding the removal of TikTok from Google Play and App Store.
TikTok is under threat
- According to Carr, the application collects a lot of sensitive data and then transmits it to Chinese servers.
- Carr noted that the app was able to store drafts, access call history, block keystrokes, monitor biometric data, and access text, images and videos from the clipboard.
TikTok is not just an app for sharing funny videos and memes. A wolf in sheep’s clothing,
– The American official is sure.
- He also said that a recent study showed that TikTok employees in China had access to the personal data of American users.
- Stores have been given until July 8 to remove the app or justify their rejection.
Note that this is not the first conflict between the US government and ByteDance-owned TikTok. In 2020, US President Donald Trump issued a decree banning the Chinese service from trading. Also, classifying the app as a threat to national security, the White House tried to force ByteDance to sell the service to one of the American companies. Potential buyers were later named Microsoft and Oracle.
Similar concerns about privacy were raised by US authorities and the WeChat app of Chinese company Tencent.
