The COVID-19 pandemic appears to have revived the PC market, but that will be according to research and consulting firm Gartner, which predicted Average PC shipments to decline by 9.5% by 2022.

According to analysts from the consulting firm, worldwide PC shipments will decline by 9.5% in 2022 compared to the previous year. With regard to the drop in demand, final consumers are most involved in it as a result of the expected drop of 13.5%, in enterprises the drop would amount to 7.2%. One of the regions in which the PC market operates will worsen will EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) where Gartner expects demand falls by 14%.

TO mobiles and tablets They don’t seem to be doing much better in 2022, as Gartner predicts these devices will a drop in shipments of 7.1 and 9 percent. As a result, and accounting for all listed device types, a 7.6% decline is ultimately expected, which contrasts with increases in PC shipments of 11% and mobile shipments of 5% registered in 2021, which saw many people renew their equipment due to remote work and that many people have started staying home longer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gartner expects the downward trend to continue in 2023, which makes sense if Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine and we look at the growth factors in 2021.

Apparently not all PC “types” will be affected equally, but one aims to be damaged more than others: Chromebooks. For those lost, a Chromebook is a computer that has Chrome OS as a pre-installed operating system, and according to Gartner, this is due to lower demand from the education sector, perhaps the main market for these computers.

Another product to be affected is 5G-enabled mobile phones, which saw shipments to Greater China grow by 65% in 2021, but for now in 2022, the area is expected to decline by 2%. On this front, the main reason is the zero tolerance policy towards COVID-19 enforced by the Chinese government.

In the rest of the world, the supply of 5G-enabled mobile phones is expected to continue to grow, but with less strength. The 47% growth recorded in 2021 will be followed by another 29% in 2022. An increase in demand is expected until 2023, but more as a result of the end of the cycle of many 4G mobiles, which will be replaced by other 5G ones.

In short, nothing that would surprise us when looking at the context we are experiencing. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused an economic crisis fueled by high inflation, so people’s wallets will be tighter to cover current expenses, which is obviously pushing them away from ideas like PC rebuilds.
