Candela develops the concept of the P-12 “flying” ferry

The Swedish company Candela developed the concept of the P-12 flying ferry. With only hydrofoils to cut the water, the boat will leave virtually no footprints, generate noise and exhaust emissions, and distinguish it from the bulky diesel ferries that transport passengers between the archipelagos that now make up Sweden’s capital.

Startup Candela is already producing cruising versions of its electric boats, but the P-12 has yet to be built. Candela CEO Gustav Hasselog said the boat is in the “design” phase, production will begin in November and trials will take place next year. The aim is for the flying ferry to become part of Stockholm’s public transport.

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions from ferries is a priority for a city surrounded by water, Stockholm is working to make ferries zero pollution in principle by 2025.

The carbon fiber Candela P-12 boat will be equipped with two propulsion units powered by 180kWh batteries, allowing it to run for three hours before recharging. The boat, which has a length of 12 meters and a diameter of 4.5 meters, weighs 8.5 tons, will accommodate 30 passengers.
