The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has delayed the launch of the VIPER rover, designed to search for water on the Moon, to November 2024.
As reported by Ukrinform, The Verge reports this.
Initially, the launch of the device was scheduled for November 2023, but it was decided to postpone it for a year to test the landing module that will take the device to the Moon.
Despite the rover’s launch delay, NASA plans to launch other versions of VIPER on two future commercial landers that will be sent to the Moon this year. One of them was developed by Intuitive Machines and the other by Astrobotic called Peregrine.
VIPER is a key component of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to send humans to the Moon. Equipped with special wheels, scientific instruments and a drill, VIPER is designed to search for ice on the Moon’s surface and obtain data on the prevalence of water there.
